Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto is considered one of the composer’s best and most mature works. When the piece was first performed in Britain, audiences demanded to hear the second movement again as an encore!

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony (nicknamed the “Fate” Symphony) was criticized by many of his contemporaries for being programmatic, for having a plot. Tchaikovsky disagreed with these critiques, defended the tragedy-to-triumph story arc of the symphony, and was ultimately vindicated by history: The Fourth Symphony is now one of the most popular in the orchestral repertoire.
